This is only a rough guide, and pictures will follow shortly, when I can be bothered.
1. Download your songs:
We have plenty of these on the forum site. Bear with us about any dead links and post them here (fretsonfire.proboards100.com/index.cgi?board=ps&action=display&thread=1193807178). There's no need to give a missing song it's own useless thread, as all the good songs get pushed down to the bottom.
Understand that this site does not personally host any of these files, and that we are probably unable to re-upload any files. This is also the reason we use file sharing websites. You will have to put up with the limits and ads, unless you either don't want the songs, or pay for an account to one of the sites.
2. Extract the Song Files
There are two popular formats for distributing songs, .zip and .rar. Windows XP and Vista are able to handle zip files with a built in utility. For users of older versions of Windows, or for rar files I suggest you download one of the following:
www.7-zip.org/download.html
www.rarlab.com/download.htm
www.winzip.com/downwz.htm
Now, Extract the files to your desktop.
3. Add the Files to the Song Folder
First, find where you installed Frets on Fire. This will commonly be in the Program Files folder for Windows users. Go into the data>songs folder. FoF will only read two folder deep inside this directory, so you can group your songs together (put all the Guitar Hero III tracks inside their own folders within a GHIII folder), but if you use any more folders, your songs will be invisible. Drag and drop the folder you extrated from the desktop a moment ago in to the song folder.
4. Fixing silence
All songs should have:
If either ogg file is missing, copy and rename it, so that you have both files. Some authors only distribute the one file to save disk space, but you will end up with silence when you make a mistake. There may be other files too, but those four are pretty much neccesary to play Frets on Fire.
5. Rock out!
Start Frets on Fire and have fun. If you have library folders, you may need to press escape to go back one level to see the songs in the other folders.
